Beyond the Opening Dances: Expand Your Dance Repertoire
Did you enjoy the magic of the Wiener Ball?
Many members of the Youth Committee performed the opening dances at the Wiener Ball beautifully.
But once the orchestra continues with the rest of the evening’s music — Slow Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot, Rumba, Cha Cha or Samba — many guests suddenly realise that their dance repertoire is still quite limited.
Instead of joining the floor, they find themselves watching from the sidelines or trying to improvise moves that do not quite fit the music.
The good news is that it does not take years of training to change that.
With just a few essential steps and the right posture, you can already take part in many more dances during the evening.
Join us and discover how a few essential steps can open the door to many more dances throughout the evening.
Why These Lessons Matter
At Viennese-style balls in Vienna and elsewhere, the orchestra does not play only Viennese Waltzes. The programme typically includes several other ballroom and Latin dances as well.
If you know the essential steps, you will no longer have to sit out when this music is played — you will be able to join the fun on the dance floor.
What You Will Learn
In cooperation with Skylight Dance Club, we have developed a series of practical, guided lessons designed to help you learn the essential movements of new dances quickly.
The Ballroom & Latin Dance Essentials lessons form a practical series designed to help you:
- Recognise which dance the music is for at balls and social dance events
- Expand your dance repertoire by learning a few essential ballroom and Latin dance steps
- Move around the floor with confidence using the correct posture and hold
- Feel comfortable joining the dance instead of sitting out
The focus is on practical social dancing rather than technical perfection.
These guided lessons concentrate on the essential movements that allow you to participate and enjoy far more of the evening on the dance floor.
The Third and Fourth Dances We Will Explore
In March we began this series of lessons with the Slow Foxtrot (Slowfox), one of the most elegant ballroom dances.
In April we introduced the Quickstep — a fast, joyful dance set to uplifting swing music, often described as feeling like floating across the floor.
On 30th May we will focus on the playful and cheeky Cha-Cha-Cha and on 6th June we will concentrate on the expressive Rumba, the dance of love. We mention the Rumba here because you will benefit most if you do the Cha-Cha-Cha first before doing the Rumba. We don’t recommend trying to learn the Rumba without any Cha-Cha-Cha experience.
Who These Lessons Are For
These guided lessons are especially suitable for:
- anyone who would like to expand their dance repertoire for formal balls and social dance events
- members of the Youth Committee who performed the opening dances at the Wiener Ball
- their friends
- former debutants and debutantes
Prior dance experience (any style) is recommended but no advanced experience is required.
Partners and individual participants are welcome.
